Human Connection

How Do You Build Human Connection?

By Jim Morris · Published September 17, 2026 · Updated September 17, 2026

Direct answer

Human connection is built through repeated moments of attention, curiosity, vulnerability, listening, generosity, and follow-through. Instead of waiting for meaningful relationships to happen, people can intentionally create opportunities for connection through small actions repeated over time.

Jim Morris calls those small repeated actions Connection Reps.

Start with presence

Presence is the entry fee. If your attention is split, nothing else on this list works. Put the phone away, close the laptop, and let the other person have all of you for the length of one conversation.

Ask better questions

"How are you?" gets an automatic answer. "What has had most of your attention lately?" gets a real one. Better questions are specific, open, and easy to answer honestly.

Listen without preparing your response

Most people listen at about half capacity because the other half is writing their reply. Try holding a two-second pause after someone finishes before you speak. It changes the whole conversation.

Remember details

Remembering a name, a kid's name, a surgery, a trip, or a deadline tells someone they mattered enough to keep. If your memory is unreliable, write it down. Nobody has ever been offended that you took notes about their life.

Follow up

Follow-up is where most relationships die. A conversation without a second contact is an event, not a relationship. The second contact is what turns a meeting into a connection.

Offer help

Be useful before you are interesting. Make an introduction, send the resource, answer the question they did not want to bother anyone with.

Share experiences

Shared experience builds relationships faster than conversation does. A meal, a project, a trip, a hard week handled together. People bond over what they go through, not what they discuss.

Create face-to-face moments

Digital keeps a relationship alive. In person tends to deepen it. When something matters, get in the room if you can.

Practice consistency

Trust is built by being the same person repeatedly. Consistency is more persuasive than intensity.
